An Easy Way to Bake a German Chocolate Cake This week I’ve got chocolate, German Chocolate and Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake, on my mind and woke up today wanting to bake one of them. What did you think about the Texas Sheet Cake I posted about this week? You’ve gotta try it. Make it and share with family and friends. Otherwise, you’ll want to eat it all yourself. 😀 The thing about German chocolate is that you have to like coconut or it’s not for you. But if you like chocolate AND coconut, you’ll love this cake. Remember I told you I’d be sharing anRead More →

Best Texas Chocolate Cakes The two best chocolate cakes ever that were made happen to be the Chocolate Sheet Cake and German Chocolate Cake, both popular Texas cakes. They’ve been a southern thing but their popularity has spread beyond the South. History of German Chocolate Cake Sam German created a chocolate bar in 1852 that would bring joy to a multitude of chocolate lovers. The first “German’s Chocolate Cake” recipe, as it was originally called, was first published in 1957 by a Texas homemaker. Recently, I was trying to think of a fruity dessert to bring to my writers’ critique group. At first, I thought about strawberries. It must be that pre-summer heat that made me want a dessert with fruit. However, I didn’t have any berries on hand. I looked at what I had in the kitchen pantry and noticed a large box of instant vanilla pudding mix. Hmmm. That sounded good. Then I remembered that I had put a carton of no-sugar mandarin orange packs in the fridge. Ah-ha! I knew what I would bring to share with the writers. A pudding with mandarin oranges. Yum. Good Friday weekend I went to a cousin’s wedding with my daughter, Chrissie. That meant I also got to visit a couple of weeks with Chrissie, my son-in-law, and two little sweet granddaughters. During this time, I started my 30 Days of Slow Cooker Recipes for the month of April. Cooking in my slow cooker at home is different than using Chrissie’s large quantity cooker. Hers is larger than mine. But there are more people to cook for at her house, so it’s all good. Even the baby is eating now from the table food – and she loves my “flop” rice and pasta recipes.Read More →

Banana pudding has been served many times in my family as long as I can remember. It was my dad’s favorite dessert. Recently, I was visiting my daughter, Cristen, and her family and she asked me to make banana pudding for an Apartment Life event she was attending. Cristen is a Program Director for Apartment Life, a unique culture that is all about caring for your neighbor. During the Christmas holiday season, I was asked to volunteer at an Apartment Life festivity by serving food. It was a joy to mingle with the CARES Teams and leaders and to get a glimpse of their love forRead More →

Strawberry Souffle for National Dessert Day

Hey, y’all! It’s National Dessert Day! One of the kitchen joys I like the most is preparing a dessert because I love sweets and enjoy making them for family and friends. Lately, I’ve strived to be more mindful of my daily nutritional intake – including desserts. Call it food for comfort, reward, or whatever you think best fits, sweets just simply taste good. That doesn’t mean I don’t like eating meat or vegetables. The bottom line is that I prefer the main meal – and the dessert. Who says I can’t have the cake and eat it, too? Since using MyFitnessPal, an easy-to-use IOS calorieRead More →
