I was one proud grandma that my Little Chef grand was excited about cooking and wanted her own cookbooks. My daughter said one day Little Chef picked out a recipe from one of the cookbooks and they went to the store to get the ingredients. That evening Little Chef made dinner with only a little help from her mom.

Order kids cookbooks that you think your little one will love.

So Little Chef and I went to the grocery store the second day her parents were on their trip. Little Chef said she wanted to make this salad because it had all the rainbow colors and is healthy. She already knew most of the ingredients she wanted to use.

Produce Section

We headed to the produce section as she picked out every item that she wanted for her recipe. The ingredients needed to be as close as possible to the order of rainbow colors.

Rainbow Colors

  1. red
  2. orange
  3. yellow
  4. green
  5. blue
  6. indigo
  7. violet

Little Chef liked choosing the red and green vegetables the best. Like strawberries and watermelon. Lettuce, grapes, and avocado (her fav).

The picture below shows that the indigo and violet colors were stacked pretty high. Blackberries, blueberries, grapes, cabbage.

Fresh Fruits and Raw Veggies

  • Red, orange, yellow, and green bell peppers
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Kiwi
  • Red, yellow, or green apples with the skin on
  • Cantaloupe
  • Honeydew melon

Feel free to change these ingredients to your choices for the rainbow salad recipe.

Making this beautiful rainbow salad was so much fun to do with Little Chef. I did prep work, washing and slicing veggies.

She arranged the salad.

We served our rainbow salad in a large rectangle glass dish. However, it would look pretty on any large platter.  The larger the better. Easier to spread out.

I like to use simple disposable white trays sometimes. No need to worry about them being broken by little hands.

But it’s fun to use different colors for a more decorative look. Like the copper tray or colorful platters shown here. And you will make your little girl’s day by letting her use your best dishes.

  5. Love a rainbow salad. My salads tend to be just two colors, some greens and tomatoes and it makes a meal quite sad. To be fair, when times get busy, it’s hard to make a plate look beautiful, but I’ll put more effort in after this recipe!
