What is a haystack?

Look the word up on the Internet and find multiple definitions: an app, digital business cards, piles of dried and cut grass stored for grazing animals. That’s not all. Do an online search for food haystacks, and you’ll come up with a zillion types of haystacks such as:

  1. a starchy food dish
  2. Butterscotch Haystacks
  3. vegetarian haystacks
  4. a haystack dessert
  5. Frito Haystack
  6. Amish Haystack
  7. Hawaiian Haystack
  8. Cherry Chocolate Haystacks
  9. Adventist Haystacks
  10. Mexican Haystacks
  11. Mennonite Haystacks
  12. Peanut Butter Haystacks

Three Haystack Recipe Ideas

I’ve listed three haystack recipe ideas, one I had in a restaurant and two that I made in my own kitchen:

  • Haystack Breakfast – this is a breakfast I had once at a restaurant, and it tasted fabulous! If you follow my blog, you know how I LOVE breakfast any time of the day. A haystack breakfast can hold you over for hours because it is very filling – and it tastes SO good.
  • Shakeology Haystack – I made this treat with vanilla-flavored Shakeology, a nutritious dietary supplement that has made a huge difference for me. It’s a perfect light dessert.
  • Dark Chocolate & Peanut Butter Haystack is the kind of haystack I made in my frugal kitchen today. Currently, I’m doing a $25-per-week food budget challenge with Patti Cake at Patty Cakes Pantry. Actually, my next post (this one) was supposed to be my grocery budget shopping trip and menus, but I just HAD to tell you about this crazy dark chocolate story.

I am trying to be extra careful not to waste any pantry staples. However, I wanted a sweet snack, namely, chocolate and had a jar of wrapped dark chocolate kisses. Unwrapping twelve of them (there were only fifteen in the jar), I put them in the microwave with four heaping teaspoons of peanut butter for melting.

Noticing a jar of wrapped dark chocolate kisses, I perked up with recipe creativity. Unwrapping twelve kisses (there were only fifteen in the jar), I put them in the microwave with four heaping teaspoons of peanut butter for melting.

Smelling a strange odor, I opened the microwave to check the chocolate and peanut butter. UGH! The smell was awful. A small heap of chocolate pieces covered the center of the plastic container. I took a spoon and moved the kisses that were bunched up around the center of the container, and there was a HOLE! Ah, that was what the smell was – melted plastic! Afraid to eat even the chocolate pieces, though they were not close to the hole, I threw all of it – chocolate, peanut butter, and plastic container – in the trash can.

Melted Chocolate

That’s not the end of the story, though. I really wanted something chocolaty, so this time I got out a small stoneware dish. I melted the last three dark chocolate kisses and a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter for twenty seconds in the microwave. Coconut, oatmeal, and almonds were added and, finally, I enjoyed my little treat.

Unforgettable experience!

Now if you’re brave enough to try out the recipe I created, here’s the recipe for my Dark Chocolate & Peanut Butter Haystack:

Recipe Notes

Each tablespoon measurement for the ingredients in this recipe should be heaping tablespoons.

The dark chocolate treat satisfied my sweets craving. I’ll make this again. It contains nuts, oats, peanut butter and dark chocolate – nutritious stuff.

  1. Forget about the haystack component. I just want the chocolate. So I was in Staples business supply store and they have a display with nibble stuff for people who crave something like chocolate — so I grabbed a container of Nonpareils (Snow-caps). Those are the best creamy dark chocolate with white sprinkles on top. I’m happy now.

Dark chocolate with sprinkles sounds good, too. But I think you would love the chocolate haystacks with all the extras mixed in. 🙂
